Furniture Care & Maintenance
Care for it well, and it will outlast the trends.
The furniture Allure carries is built to last decades. This guide covers the small habits and right products that protect fine wood, leather, fabric, outdoor pieces, and luxury mattresses, so your investment ages beautifully.

Fine Wood
Fine wood furniture needs three things: protection from moisture and heat, protection from sunlight, and the right cleaning products. Dust weekly with a soft, dry microfiber cloth. Use coasters, placemats, and trivets without exception; water rings and heat marks are the most common and most avoidable wood damage. Keep pieces out of prolonged direct sun, which fades and dries finishes, and away from heating vents. Clean with products made for your finish type, never all-purpose sprays: ammonia, silicone, and alcohol-based cleaners degrade fine finishes over time. Wipe spills immediately, then dry. Solid-wood pieces from makers like Dovetail may show seasonal movement with humidity changes; keeping indoor humidity moderate protects joinery.
Leather
Quality leather, like the hides on Bradington-Young, American Leather, and Bracci pieces, wants regular light care rather than occasional heavy correction. Dust weekly with a dry cloth and vacuum crevices with a soft brush. Keep leather out of direct sun and at least two feet from heat sources, which cause drying and cracking. Blot spills immediately with a clean dry cloth; never rub, and never use household cleaners, disinfecting wipes, or saddle soap. Condition full-grain and aniline leathers every 6 to 12 months with a manufacturer-approved conditioner; protected leathers need less. Test any product somewhere hidden first. Natural markings, scars, and patina development are characteristics of genuine hides, not defects.
Fabric and Performance Upholstery
Start with the cleaning code, which is on the piece's tag or available from us: W (water-based cleaners), S (solvent only), WS (either), or X (vacuum and professional cleaning only). Using the wrong cleaner sets stains and can void protection coverage. Week to week: vacuum with a soft brush attachment, rotate and flip loose cushions for even wear, and fluff down-blend cushions to restore loft. Blot spills immediately, working from the outside of the spill inward. Performance fabrics, common across our Four Hands and custom-order programs, resist stains and typically clean with mild soap and water, but confirm the specific fabric's guidance first. Feathers occasionally working through down cushion ticking is normal.
Outdoor Furniture
Even outdoor-rated pieces, like Tommy Bahama Outdoor collections, last dramatically longer with basic care. Rinse frames and clean cushions with mild soap and water seasonally. Store or cover cushions when not in use for extended periods; outdoor fabric resists moisture and fading but isn't immortal. Cover or store pieces through winter, and check frame hardware annually. Trapped moisture is the main enemy: let everything dry fully before covering.

Mattresses
- Use a quality mattress protector from day one: stains void most manufacturer warranties
- Support the mattress on the base or foundation the manufacturer specifies
- Rotate head-to-foot every 3 to 6 months if your model recommends it (many Tempur-Pedic models are no-rotate; check your model's guidance)
- Vacuum the surface occasionally and air the bed weekly by pulling bedding back for an hour
- Never dry clean or soak a mattress; spot clean per the manufacturer's instructions only
Products to Avoid
- All-purpose household cleaners, disinfecting wipes, and glass cleaner on wood or leather
- Silicone-based polishes, which build residue that complicates refinishing
- Bleach and ammonia anywhere near upholstery or leather
- Steam cleaners on leather or non-W-coded fabrics
- Furniture oils on lacquered finishes, which sit on top and attract dust
When to Call a Professional
Call a professional for set-in stains on X-coded or S-coded fabrics, any leather correction beyond light conditioning, structural repairs, and finish restoration on fine wood. And call us first at (925) 951-6263: if the issue traces to a defect, it belongs under warranty; if it's an accident on a Montage-protected piece, it may belong in a claim; and if it's neither, we can point you to the right specialist.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is a fabric cleaning code?
A letter code, W, S, WS, or X, that tells you which cleaning methods are safe: water-based, solvent-based, either, or vacuum/professional only. Check the code before applying anything to upholstery.
How often should leather be conditioned?
Every 6 to 12 months for full-grain and aniline leathers, less often for protected leathers. Always use a product approved for your specific leather type.
My cushions are softening. Is that a defect?
Some initial softening is normal break-in as fills settle to their intended feel. Softening beyond normal ranges or visible core failure may be a warranty matter: call us and we'll assess it.
Can I use a steam mop near my wood furniture?
Keep steam away from wood furniture legs and bases; repeated steam exposure damages finishes at the floor line.
